The eye of the needle was once located in Damascus and served as a side gate alongside the main entrance of the "street called straight". Being a side gate, it was not intended for passage by animals, especially camels carrying side loads. So it was nigh impossible for the act to happen.

It is true that the "Eye of the Needle" was a little entrance to Jerusalem. Camels would have to be unloaded to pass through because they were heavily loaded with riders and merchandise. Thus, the comparison is that to get into paradise, a wealthy person would need to sell off his earthly belongings in a like manner.
