The Saudi government has sentenced a Bangladeshi man and a woman to death.
I had no intention of making a post about such a sensitive and unpleasant topic. However, given the rumours circulating in the public domain, the false narratives being spread by sections of the media and on social media, and the way Islam is being targeted by using the Saudi government as a reference, I felt it was my responsibility to raise my voice against this injustice and misinformation. That is why I am making this post.
What rumours are being spread?
People are claiming three things:
That the man and the woman were husband and wife.
That they had gone to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah.
That the alleged act took place inside Masjid al-Haram.
All three claims are false, according to the account presented here.
The man's father reportedly stated publicly before the media that the family did not know the woman and that his son was unmarried.
Secondly, they had not travelled to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah.
Thirdly, the alleged act did not take place inside Masjid al-Haram.
So, what actually happened? Let me present the facts as they have been reported.
According to this account, both individuals were employed by the Binladin Group and had arrived in 2022. Since they were both Bangladeshi nationals living and working in Saudi Arabia, they reportedly developed feelings for each other while working together. Their relationship eventually led to what is described as a sinful act.
However, the location they allegedly chose was within the Hudud al-Haram—the sacred boundaries of the Haram—not inside Masjid al-Haram itself.
According to the account, they were committing the alleged act in a room while a friend sat outside to keep watch. That friend reportedly recorded them and used the video to blackmail them. When they refused to comply with his demands, he allegedly made the video public.
The video went viral and eventually came to the attention of the Saudi authorities. They reportedly investigated the footage, conducted an inquiry, and subsequently arrested all three individuals.
This was not a case in which two people suddenly arrived for Umrah, committed an offence, and were immediately sentenced to death.
According to the account, the legal proceedings continued for three years. The friend who allegedly recorded and circulated the video was reportedly sentenced to 20 years in prison.
But why were the other two sentenced to death despite being unmarried?
According to the argument presented here, the reason was that the alleged offence took place not in an ordinary location but within the sacred boundaries of the Haram, on sacred and holy land.
The argument is that if such acts were allowed to go unpunished, others might take advantage of the situation and turn a sacred place into a place for committing sins.
However, it is important to distinguish these claims from independently verified facts. The exact charges, legal judgment, and official grounds for any death sentence should be confirmed through reliable sources before being presented as established facts.
Now, I want to address the media and those who are allegedly trying to malign Islam through misinformation and propaganda.
I have even heard people saying things like, "Think carefully before going for Umrah now."
But let me make one thing clear: spreading propaganda and circulating false rumours will not stop people from performing Umrah. It will not stop Hajj, nor will it stop Muslims from performing Tawaf around the Kaaba.
Why?
Because we go there out of our love for Allah, to behold the Kaaba, and to perform Tawaf around His sacred House.
No amount of misinformation or propaganda can erase the faith and devotion that inspire millions of Muslims to undertake this sacred journey.
