@avalioplantas If they were dying and suffering and living a hard existence I'd agree with you. But my understanding is that they function pretty well as their own independent community. If that is the case, why bother them?

@SketchesbyBoze I feel like Americans have such interesting history to say it is such a young nation. One of my favourite books set in America is The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. The book is really so sad but it was refreshing to read of America in fiction in a completely different era!

@LClare51 @EvelineTimeless No I totally agree! I also think we tend to forget that some parents don't have time, money or even the skill to feed their kids decent meals. If we regulate school meals, they will get access to at least one healthy meal a day which is far better than none!

@LebbyRachel1 @NoLongerTheFuzz People should be eating them regardless of whether they eat meat or not. They contain vitamins, fibre, antioxidants etc. Balanced diets (meat included) legitimately recommend them.

I don't agree with kids starving but the alternative to "I don't like this healthy food" is not "okay, here's this unhealthy food instead". Sure, choice is fine but the choices have to be healthy choices otherwise it makes no sense.

@EvelineTimeless @LClare51 I am not claiming a lentil dish at school fixes everything, but repeated exposure to nutritious food helps shape preferences and habits. Children often reject unfamiliar foods initially; that doesn't mean we stop offering them.

@EvelineTimeless @LClare51 Because evidence (not minor evidence either, it is concrete fact) shows that bad diets in childhood have a direct impact on adulthood. This isn't a situation you can really "turn around". If the parents aren't willing to fix it the government will do it for you to protect them.

@Pygar668177 @JaneMor79173373 @BradfemlyWalsh I left school in 2018 and we couldn't leave? Never heard of a school that allows that as half the kids probably wouldn't come back. The main gates are locked for security. You realistically can't leave without jumping fences.

@EvelineTimeless @LClare51 But that's the point? It isn't being introduced at home. Some kids have never even seen a lentil or a chickpea in person. The parents don't eat them so the kids don't eat them either. We can let the parents decide everything sure, but the kids reap the consequences in the end.

@Ria1984 @craigh_ I do agree with this but genuinely....what do we do? This country has one of the worst cases of obesity in Europe. Parents are coming up with every excuse under the sun to justify 50%+ heavily processed diets. These kids can't be blamed for their parents so we have to mitigate.

@_LamNam_ I mean....I asked my parents this (60s & 70s babies) and they said school dinners were pretty rubbish but their home meals were good? They could eat crap at school because their diet was largely decent. Nowadays kids eat crap at home and then eat it at school too.

@North_Lites @zatzi That is kinda the issue. A lot of kids have horrific diets. For some, school is the only place they'll get a decent meal. The easiest way to ensure the kids are getting a good meal is to make sure the meals at school are good. Parents then feed their kids what they want.

@LottieP10108 @NoLongerTheFuzz Okay but let's be real, statistically speaking, 3/4 of her class are not severe, high support needs SEN. A few? Totally believable. The vast majority of the class? No. Which means they have no excuse not to be able to do SOME of those tasks. It is largely parenting.

@BarryPierce Erm....gen z here. We love Terry Pratchett? (Good omens is SO popular amongst gen z as just one example). I find mainstream booktok has a very skewed genre preference. It isn't representative of general reading views.
