I lived in Botswana during Mogae and Khama's time. My hope is that Boko will lead the way Mogae led. During Mogae's time, Botswana saw major infrastructural developments which included multiple first class hospitals like Scottish Livingstone, Lobatse Mental (Sbrana) etc. Roads were built and clean water pipes laid even in the most arid of areas.
For me it was not these major projects that convinced me that he knew what he was doing. It was his approach to HIV treatment. He destigmatized it and prioritized access to medication. At the time the prevalence was upwards of 30% esp in cities.
He also grew a program called Tsabana to a national program. This program provided weaning foods for free to infants across the whole country. Although it was started under Masire, it became a pillar in infant healthcare at a time when Botswana was being ravaged by HIV.
I also witnessed his desire to modernize the country for all. One project that caught my eye was the modernization of the Peleng settlement in Lobatse. This was a squatter-camp-like-settlement on a hill whose establishment is said to have been before colonization. He built roads, drainage and water & sewage pipes. The lives of those pple improved dramatically.
Sadly, I can't write much about Khama's accomplishments except his establishment of DIS, an intelligency unit more like CIO which in the early days was fingered in the killing of one John Kalafatis.
Under Khama, Botswana was sliding towards authoritarianism mostly because of his military style of leadership.
I hope President Boko will take some time to study why Mogae connected with the people and then put back Botswana on the path for greater glory.
With the season officially over we put together the first RSG awards! Who was you MVP on the menβs side? Itβs hard not to give it to Tebogo ππ
