Free trade agreements (FTAs) are most beneficial for Maldives when signed with countries we export (tuna etc) a lot to, like UK and other European nations.

Cause we don’t import much from these countries, so we wouldn’t lose much in tariff revenue. But we can sell our products, like tuna, at higher prices without tax in their markets. So, it’s a huge win for our suppliers.

But when we sign FTAs with countries like India and China, we lose significant tariff income cause we import a lot from them. FTA means gov can’t charge tax on it. On the other hand, our exports don’t fetch high prices in those markets, so we don’t gain much from exports. Overall, FTAs with these countries result in a net loss.

That’s why it makes more sense for us to sign FTAs with high income countries, where we can earn more from exports and avoid major losses in tariff revenue.

FTAs with UK and EU would be major wins.
