I find Charlie Kirk’s assassination genuinely terrible.

I’m an old millennial raised in the 90s, when being “edgy” meant slurs — but I grew up. Being cruel stopped feeling cool, and I realized everyone deserves equal rights whether you understand them or not. Can't pick and choose.

I genuinely can't remember a time when things were this bad.

My left leaning politics now are simple: Medicare for All, fix our decaying infrastructure, regulating parasitic industries like insurance, and protecting working people’s right to collectively bargain. That’s it. None of this has anything to do with violence or political correctness -> so why are we shoehorned in? I think its on purpose.

It's easy to demonize an entire group. Before anyone was even caught, I log on and see leaders and influencers blaming “the left” as violent — Trump calling citizens “vermin,” Musk calling the left “murderers” -> Netanyahu is even blaming progressives??? Does wanting healthcare have anything to do with this countries issues with violence?

This moment matters because Kirk was a cultural figure. His killing will be framed as “political violence,” which in practice is code for violence against elites. And when elites are the ones threatened, every rhetorical dial in the algorithms will be turned up to 11. That's why when a kid is shot in the face at school it won't be a blip. The current cultural narrators can't see themselves as some random school shooting victim but they can see themselves as Kirk.

Meanwhile the fastest way for untalented people to make money today in algo driven social media environment is by creating anger online. Elon Musk signal-boosts both angry right-wing videos and mentally ill celebratory left-wing ones, feeding a loop of outrage -> on purpose -> for engagement and it fucking works. It's actually wild how well it works.

You need to know these videos you see on your feed are the ones intended for you to see. It's not happenstance. Ask yourself why? The current political or social influencers calling for war or infighting won’t be fighting it; they’ll profit from it.

As always, ordinary people absorb the devastation of a broken economy or familial loss while they pocket the profits and cheer it on.
