في مشهدٍ إنساني داخل ARC Raiders، تحول صراع افتراضي إلى حوار إنساني عميق؛ حيث التقى لاعب "روسي 🇷🇺" بآخر "أوكراني 🇺🇦" في خريطة Buried City.
After I posted about prefab housing, I was told manufactured housing already solved cost, that the only real answer to cost is vertical integration, that Sears proved it a century ago, that I'm ignoring panelization, that centralized factories work for every other industry so why not construction, and that prefab absolutely works if you'd just look at [specific company in a specific market].
The problem is we are using the same word to mean five different things and are arguing past each other.
Two questions and a chart that will help clarify definitions: how big is the component you're shipping, and how finished is it when it leaves the factory?
- manufactured housing ships whole buildings, nearly complete. It has its own HUD code, permanent chassis, different financing, and a different buyer demographic. It is cheaper and cost has been solved in a factory. But that was never my argument, the original post was about single family housing.
- panelizers ship flat pieces. Wall panels, floor cassettes, sometimes with windows in. Sears was this. Pre-cut lumber, numbered, shipped by rail. It worked for 32 years by cutting the middleman markup on materials, not the labor. When people said "Sears proved prefab works," they're right about a very specific version that keeps the components small and simple.
- kit of parts is a more complete panel that ships flat but shows up with structure and MEP. You'd snap them together on-site and you'd get module level completion with panel-level shipping efficiency. The coordination required to pre-integrate that many systems into a flat-packable panel has proven harder than just building the whole room in a factory.
- vertical integration is a business model. Do you want to be a developer, a trade replacement via robotics, or a building product supplier? The tradeoff is usually scale for control.
Now here's what I think everyone is missing about the microfactory. See the first chart from @_brianpotter made in 2021.
- There's a physical ceiling on component size that every building component company must obey.
- When you produce on site, component size is no longer limited by a flatbed. It's limited by the robot's reach and can be installed by crane. Larger components are enabled which leads to a lower cost of installation.
The second chart shows where the microfactory has a shot at changing prefab cost structure.
In a nutshell, small inputs lead to unconstrained outputs.
My "Roman Empire is the realization that my life is a lottery win. Somewhere in Sudan, Pålestine, iran, Afghanistan, Iraq or Congo, there is a boy smarter than me. He is more disciplined, more resilient, and holds more potential in his single finger than I do in my entire career.
The only difference? I am siting in a train and he is sting in the rubble of his dreams.
My "bad days" are his wildest dreams.
My "burnout" is a luxury he can't afford because his only job is staying alive.
It's geographical luck and it's a haunting injustice that we all refuse to acknowledge and look away
There's a contingent of creators in the indie space that have obtained the Mandate of Heaven to return us to the zenith of Y2K/2000s futurism aesthetics and I for one pray for nothing but their continued health and success.
The average monthly salary in Nigeria, Kenya, and Bangladesh is roughly $470, $393, and $220. Because Twitter no longer meaningfully penalizes accounts that spread lies, incite conflict, or promote hate, and has now monetized engagement, it's created a system where these bad actors can profit. For some folks in lower-income countries, provoking outrage abroad can earn double the pay of a full-time local job. They've effectively incentivized a perfect storm that funds & fuels Skrulls to cause chaos in western society.
The neighborhood group was discussing the guys who go through rubbish bins and make a mess. This lady came in and basically changed the tone of the discussion
The woman who says she wants a sensitive man is telling the truth but she's lying about what sensitive means. she wants a man sensitive enough to read her unspoken needs but insensitive enough to ignore her spoken fears, sensitive to her heart but insensitive to her protests when he pulls her toward the life she's too afraid to choose. the man who takes her words literally becomes the man she leaves, while the man who understands the contradiction becomes the man she follows into fire
The good man who refuses the crown hands it to the devil. Purity that will not dirty its hands ensures dirty hands will rule the pure, and in the end your humility becomes the greatest pride of all - the pride of staying clean while children suffer
