HERE'S WHAT TRUMP DOESN'T GET ABOUT TARIFFS:

When you're trying to revitalize a specific US industry tariffs can be a good tool. You tax the foreign product to make it more expensive, which incentivizes buying the less expensive American good.

What Trump is missing is the second part of the equation. You need to ramp up US industrial policy at the same time, which basically means you have to subsidize the US industry to make it more competitive. Trump thinks he can do tariffs and then there's naturally a boom in US manufacturing. He's wrong about that, it won't happen without massive US government investment (which he would deride as socialism).

The other problem is that his tariffs aren't specific and targeted, they're across the board. Which, simply put, is economic insanity. This will manifest as a sales tax on everything we import, which will crush the working class.
