Just 30 kilometers north of Tzaneen in Limpopo province, South Africa, lies the village of Medingen. It is here that Prudence Sekgodiso’s journey as an athlete began—one that would lead to her becoming one of the country’s leading middle-distance runners.
Last year, Sekgodiso made history by becoming the first South African woman to win an indoor gold medal at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China.
Following her world-leading and national record time of 1:58.40 in the 800-meter final, she said in a Bidvest Group interview: “I was in disbelief. Going to China I knew I was going to [win a] medal, but not a gold medal. I would say all of this came down to me working hard and doing what I have always wanted.”
