My mother’s family is Lebanese Shiite. My father’s, Sunni, from Damascus. I grew up in Lebanon. I went to a French Catholic school. And we lived through war.

The Lebanese civil war. Then the wars with Israel.

The south was occupied by Israelis fed up with terrorists crossing the border. The rest of the country was occupied by the Syrian army, which ruled every part of our lives and terrorized the powerful just as much as the powerless.

Shelling. Checkpoints. Edgy adults. Trauma. Disrupted life. Shouting. Sonic booms. The radio. The TV. The newspapers.

Israel. The Zionists. The Jews.

It was all because of the Jews.

One day, Israel will disappear, they said. Soon, said Hassan Nasrallah. Eventually, it will be destroyed. That was the general belief, repeated so often it stopped sounding like an opinion and started sounding like a fact.

As a child, I asked: why is Israel doing this to us?

Because the Jews are the Jews.

That was the whole answer. Nobody needed a better one.

In my mid-twenties, after my divorce, I decided to raise my son in Europe. I moved to France. I ended up in Strasbourg, surrounded by Jews.

On the first day, I had a panic attack.

That stopped me. It forced a question I had never asked myself: why? Why this reaction, to nothing, to no one, to strangers on a street?

Because I was sharing space with the enemy.

Why is the Jew the enemy?

I had never met one.

So I started thinking. Reading. Zooming out.

And I realized: everything I knew about the Jew was not true.

O libanês Saleh Machnouk (@saleh.machnouk) gravou um vídeo na semana passada no qual mostrou pesquisas sobre 79% dos libaneses defenderem o desarmamento do Hezbollah e que apenas o Exército tivesse o direito de portar armas no país. Ele também lembrou que 55% apoiam a paz com Israel, enquanto 82% da população tem uma visão negativa ou muito negativa do Irã. Ainda assim, pessoas que vivem a milhares de quilômetros do país insistem em defender o Irã e seu representante na região: o Hezbollah.
A maioria dos libaneses, no entanto, reivindica o direito de decidir os rumos do próprio país, sem a interferência de ativistas estrangeiros que não estão escutando o que o povo do Líbano quer. O acordo entre Israel e o governo do Líbano, inclusive, é defendido como uma decisão soberana, respaldada pela vontade popular.
Por isso, a mensagem libanesa defendida por Machnouk é clara: parem de falar em nome deles e respeitem o que os próprios libaneses dizem querer para o futuro do país. Para eles, o principal inimigo do Líbano é a influência do regime iraniano e do Hezbollah.

I'm half-Syrian, half-Lebanese, and here's why I can't stand people like Greta Thunberg. She quit school to chase climate activism while millions of children in my region quit school because their families can't afford it. She skips university "for Palestine" while our youth can't afford tuition, transport, or a functioning country to build a future in. She's never had a job; our people can't find one. She travels around the world (on a bicycle, of course) and sails to Gaza on a whim; our people can't get a visa to leave the misery they were born into. She has the luxury of adopting foreign causes; we don't have the luxury of just one problem. Millions of us live abroad because that's the only way to build a sustainable life. She acts like suffering belongs to Palestinians alone, while everyone in the Middle East lives in hell too, and it's not because of capitalism or climate change. It's because of a destructive ideology that uses the Palestinian cause as its tool. And like Khamenei, like Sinwar, like Arafat before her, she wears the keffiyeh — the uniform of that ideology, not a symbol of peace.

Then there's the shirt: "Yalla Intifada." The First Intifada (1987–1993) began as a mostly grassroots uprising — strikes, boycotts, stone-throwing — and still killed roughly 1,100 Palestinians and 160 Israelis. The Second Intifada (2000–2005) was a different animal entirely: a sustained campaign of suicide bombings that ripped through Israeli buses, cafés, and markets, deliberately targeting civilians. It left close to 3,000 Palestinians and 1,000 Israelis dead. "Intifada" doesn't mean "ceasefire." It doesn't mean "peace talks." It means uprising by force, and the second one was defined by terror attacks on ordinary people.

So while Greta claims to be protesting an alleged genocide, the slogan on her chest is a celebration of the exact kind of violence that killed thousands, most of them Palestinian. She isn't standing against death. She's wearing merchandise for it.
