@DemandDisclosur @RickSlickster@IdeasFactory009@deedydas Not my experience. There are always contrarians. Just need the ammo to support it. My professors, while not necessarily agreeing with a position, would always give the contrarian position air IF the supporting facts were there. May come w/ more questions, but that’s the point.
@DirkStruart@RickSlickster@deedydas Excluding the “heck, why not try” apps, most kids who apply to ivies can do the work. There are true superstars that leap off the page. For remaining, you’re basically nitpicking, e.g., kid wanting oversubscribed major vs kid aiming for undersubscribed classics major.
@RickSlickster@DirkStruart@deedydas Admissions people are human, so there’s some “I feel good today” that goes into evaluations. That said, every admissions officer I’ve worked with was professional and fair. In highly selective admissions, apps are read twice. This allows for alternative reads of a candidate.
@deedydas Tell Reddit dad that son will be ok. Honors college at UMAmherst is filled w/talent. He’ll be challenged. They’ll throw the best resources at him, which will seem unfair to other students. Not unusual for 1600 test takers to be denied at Ivies. Happens more often than you think.

@RocCityBuilt@RickSlickster@jasmineweidenb1 @PeteReceipts If I can add clarity, a kid scoring 1450 (770M/680V) wants an engineering degree. Another kid scores 1400 (600M/800V) who intends to major in English or Classics. I’m probably taking the 1400 kid b/c 770M is meh at Yale and engineering is an oversubscribed major. Classics isn’t.
