@Noahpinion @tszzl Not so much heat that it boils all water and water-based life on the surface. Iirc this wouldn't be enough to melt the surface rocks but it would be impossible for even extremophiles to survive until the planet has had time to cool again

@Noahpinion @tszzl No matter what form it's in all of those N atoms are going to be converting a huge amount of gravitational potential energy into heat when they fall into Mars's gravity well. It's impossible to do on a human timescale without cooking the planet, regardless of descent method.

@radiofreejohn @tszzl It'd need a more powerful plant than any currently existing on Earth, but a fission reactor parked at the Mars-Sun L1 point dedicated to powering an electromagnet would produce the same protection as the Earth's field gives us. Trivial issue compared to the rest of terraforming.
