Most of you don’t understand the difference between a Lagos hit, a Nigerian hit, an African hit, and a global hit.

And because of that, you mistake songs that are popular on the streets of Lagos for songs that are actually huge across Nigeria or beyond.

The truth is, once an artist or song isn’t particularly popular in Lagos, some of you are quick to dismiss the record entirely, regardless of its achievements in other parts of Nigeria, Africa, or the world.

This is exactly why, in 2017, some of you ranked “Penalty” by Small Doctor ahead of “Mad Over You” by Runtown on MTV Base.

Let me give you some examples:

“No Wahala” — 1da Banton is a Global hit

“Johnny” — Yemi Alade is an African hit

“Yahooze” — Olu Maintain is a Nigerian hit

“Penalty” — Small Doctor is Lagos hit

“Gongo Aso” — 9ice is Lagos + 🇳🇬 Nigeria hit

“Yori Yori” — Bracket is Nigeria + Africa hit

“Last Last” — Burna Boy is Lagos + 🇳🇬 Nigeria + Africa + Global hit

“Personally” — P-Square is Lagos + 🇳🇬 Nigeria + Africa hit

“Essence” — Wizkid ft. Tems is Lagos + 🇳🇬 Nigeria + Africa + Global hit

“Love Nwantiti” — CKay is Africa + Global hit

“Calm Down” — Rema is Lagos + 🇳🇬 Nigeria + Africa + Global hit

And even when we say Africa, we still need to understand that Africa is not one market.

You have West Africa, East Africa, North Africa, Central Africa and Southern Africa.

The same thing applies to the global market.
A song can be huge in Europe, America, Asia, or Africa without necessarily being equally successful in every territory.

That is why when you look at some of the songs we casually call “global hits,” you have to ask: global where?

Some songs dominate Lagos but barely move elsewhere in Nigeria.

Some are massive across Nigeria but don’t have much impact outside the country.

Some are huge across Africa but never really break into Europe, America or Asia.

And some songs genuinely cross all those markets.

So when you’re judging the size or impact of a hit song, you cannot simply look at where the song is popular and assume that represents the entire market.

Hits have territories. Hits have levels. Hits have different degrees of penetration.

Some songs cherry-pick certain markets: they are massive in one territory and relatively unknown in another.

So if we’re going to have serious conversations about the biggest songs, artists and hits, we need to factor in geography, market penetration, longevity, cultural impact and actual achievements, not just how popular a song was on the streets of Lagos.

Lagos is a single market.
Nigeria is a collection of market.
Africa is a collection of collective markets.
The world is an even bigger collection of markets.
