Socialist-aligned candidates are winning energy in low-turnout primaries while holding positions (abolish ICE, past support for defunding police, etc.) that sit far outside the mainstream.

Critics inside and outside the party are pointing out the obvious:

Private political parties can set their own standards. They do not have to hand their nominations to people who reject the traditional platform.

In purple states, the math is unforgiving. Only a few percentage points of swing voters decide general elections. Those voters tend to punish candidates who sound extreme on crime, borders, and basic competence.

Primaries reward the activist base.

General elections still reward normal.The gap between the two is growing.
