Say my name or I ignore your email

It’s basic etiquette to address a person by name when you email, DM, or WhatsApp them. If you have the decency to sign off with your name at the end of a message, you should have the same decency to address the recipient by theirs.

How difficult is it to write:

•Good morning, Sampa
•Hi, Julia
•Hello, Liam
•Dear Sibeso

Instead, many choose to treat the recipient as nameless:

•Hello,
•Good morning,
•Hi,

Personally, I ignore every email or message that doesn’t include my name. In fact, I delete it—or worse. It doesn’t matter who the sender is.

Unfortunately, this arrogance and lack of basic etiquette has become commonplace, even in official communication—including from customer service reps.

I ditched banking with one bank for this exact reason and others. You know my name—use it. At the very least, “Good day, sir” or “Dear madam” is acceptable. But never “Hello” or “Good morning.” In 2023, I also ended a contract with a security company for the same behavior.

Regard for others doesn’t disappear just because communication is digital.

So, the next time you don’t get a response to your message, check if you sent it to a nameless person.
