Canadian politicians have been condemning an effigy strung up at a recent pro-Palestine protest.
To hear them tell it, it was vile antisemitism: a Jewish person hanging from a noose.
But that’s a lie -- one now being used to criminalize protest and vilify protesters.
Let’s talk about the truth:
It’s a relief to hear the Prime Minister express some moral outrage over Ben-Gvir’s brutish behaviour, outrage which has been missing during Israel’s attack on Iran, bombardment of Lebanon and ongoing genocide in Gaza.
But strong words must be followed by strong action. Sanctioning individual ministers is not enough when this cruelty is mirrored in Israeli state policy. Close the loophole on arms sales, cancel the free trade agreement and use every tool in Canada’s diplomatic arsenal to end Israel’s impunity.
In 2021, 619 people died during B.C.’s heat dome.
Now, as B.C. faces more record-breaking temperatures, Vancouver is cutting cooling kits.
We keep acting shocked by preventable tragedies while cutting the very things designed to prevent them.
Extreme heat is not an inconvenience for vulnerable people, it’s a public health emergency.
BREAKING: Israeli attacks on Lebanon have killed at least 657 people and injured 1,444 others since a US-brokered “ceasefire” came into effect in mid-April.
