There are many achievements from my role as Labour & Social Affairs Attaché at the British Embassy in Berlin about which I am proud, from fast paced work during the pandemic to advice that fed into the Skills Act 2022.

I was also keen to see UK and German regions with similar structural challenges learn from each other. One idea back in 2020 was to link the Greater Manchester Combined Authority with the Ruhr Region in Western Germany. The following year they signed a cooperation agreement.

Andy Burnham has headed to Germany at least three times since that first visit. Little did I know the now Prime Minister's thoughts on policy would feature Germany so much, be it his 2024 book with Steve Rotheram, or his speeches before forming a government.

Not many Prime Ministers would quote Art. 72 Paragraph 2 of the German constitution in a key speech, which requires the whole country to have equivalent living conditions.
