DEMOCRAT MAYOR ARRESTED IN $1.5 MILLION COVID RELIEF FRAUD CASE

Lawrence, Massachusetts Democrat Mayor Brian DePeña has been arrested on federal wire fraud and money laundering charges after prosecutors say he obtained more than $1.5 million in COVID-era small-business loans and allegedly used the money for everything but COVID relief.

Federal prosecutors allege DePeña diverted the taxpayer-backed funds to pay personal tax debts, pour money into his mayoral campaign and pay off more than $880,000 in high-interest mortgages.

The money was supposed to help his tire business recover from the pandemic.

Instead, prosecutors allege more than $1.6 MILLION in principal remained outstanding as of August 5.

Another COVID relief program. Another politician accused of treating taxpayer money like a personal slush fund.
