My dad loved telling this one story from his boyhood on the farm, the kind that still makes you catch your breath even decades later.

He and my grandfather were moving their big, cantankerous bull from the pasture into the barn one quiet afternoon. The sun was warm on their backs, the air smelled of hay and earth, and everything was moving along just fine—until it wasn’t. In a heartbeat, with no warning at all, the bull let out a thunderous snort, lowered its massive head, and charged straight at my dad like a runaway freight train.

The beast slammed him against the heavy barn door, pinning him there with its thick skull pressed hard into his chest. For one terrifying moment, my dad stared into those wild, rolling eyes and knew he was completely at the animal’s mercy. My grandfather stood frozen a few feet away, helpless—there was nothing he could do. One wrong move and the bull might have crushed his youngest son right there in the dirt.

But then, by the grace of God and for reasons no one will ever understand, the bull suddenly blinked, shook its head like it had just woken from a bad dream, and backed away as calm as you please. My dad slid down the door, gasping for air, bruised but alive. The bull simply wandered off toward the feed trough like nothing had happened.
