For years, people have been wondering when we would reach the point where fake, AI-generated content would become good enough to cause mass confusion in relation to major news events.

We appear to be reaching that point, particularly with AI audio and images, both in terms of the quality of the content being created and also the increasing ease with which these fake images and clips be can generated and shared online.

Just in the last few months, there have been several examples of AI-generated images and audio clips in relation to major news events misleading millions online, as well as journalists and mainstream news outlets:

- An AI audio of Donald Trump Jr talking about Russia and Ukraine
- A an AI image of a riot inside a UK hospital after a stabbing
- An AI image of Netanyahu, Trump and Musk during an official visit to Washington DC
- An AI image of Israeli attacks near Beirut airport

As the technology gets even better and with AI-generated video soon becoming more easily accessible, learning to verify AI-generated content increasingly looks like a necessity in the digital information space.

The extreme Right are very loud rather than very popular. But as long as the media mistake loudness for popularity, the extreme Right will keep getting more airtime than their rivals. That’s not to underestimate the very real frustrations with politics that many of their supporters feel, but it does give us the first very real sign that the march of the Far Right is not as relentless and unstoppable as they would browbeat us into believing. It’ll be hard work and demand full attention, but they CAN be stopped. And that gives me hope.
