Septoria is the most expensive disease to suppress, why start with anything less than the highest septoria resistance rating! Don’t let this dry season fool you, septoria control starts with the variety!
@hanslope Sorry, John @hanslope. My reply reads like I'm suggesting you haven't checked under the leaves!🙈 It was intended as bit of help to anyone else who's not come across Gout Fly before. 👍
@hanslope Unfortunately it's widespread in both spring and late drilled crops. If you peel leaves back from ears not fully emerged there's a strong chance you'll find feeding damage. Obviously depends on weather etc but likely to mean high pressure from 2nd generation in autumn!
High levels Gout Fly in late drilled and spring wheat across south of England. Peel flag leaf back from ears that haven't emerged or elongated fully and chances are there'll be feeding damage. Yield loss depends on timing and other stress. 2nd generation could be big problem!
@AgriiUK WB variety trials near Saltash, Cornwall looking excellent. Very strong growth despite the dry conditions. High levels active mildew in the untreated plots of some and a few traces brown rust, but treated plots clean.
@AgriiUK winter barley variety trial site on the Essex/Suffolk border starting to show significant drought stress. High levels very active brown rust in susceptible varieties plus extremely high levels powdery mildew, especially in more stressed/backward patches.
@KertonMC@allohexaploid@breederphil Same here in Essex unfortunately Matt! Puts a level of uncertainty into the results from what is otherwise an excellent block of trials. 😡 Widespread problem this year and very difficult to prevent.
Levels not as high as at Bridgend, but LLS building rapidly and already severe in @AgriiUK variety trials near Blandford, Dorset. Again fungicides applied have struggled to hold it and it will have a significant impact on yield. Speed of development differences showing nicely.
Huge early growth differences across winter wheat varieties at @AgriiUK trial site in S Wales. The most forward entries at GS 31 and very vigorous, others still tillering with huge amount less biomass. Neither is a negative, just needs factoring in when choosing what works where!
Light Leaf Spot absolutely rampant again across many entries in @AgriiUK R&D variety trials in S Wales. Infection keeping pace with new growth and causing severe stunting. Even top tier fungicide program can’t hold it. Highlights yet again how important correct variety choice is.

Thankfully still limited numbers of crops with ears exposed but Orange Wheat Blossom midge active this evening @Agrii R&D plots at Throws Farm near Dunmow, Essex. Along with high levels of both yellow and brown rust crops are in for a challenging couple of months!
