Are we forgetting the customer support call? He literally heard the real Nikki screaming in agony from a dark purgatory over the phone. He had 100% confirmation that her soul was being actively tortured, and instead of helping her, he asked if being with him was really that bad.
He knew it was real and he chose to keep her trapped
