Second viewing (in 35mm) really solidified my thoughts on Frankenstein. It’s amazing.

Victor’s disapproval of the creature, his abuse of it, and his own personal disgust that such a vile unintelligent thing could be associated with him. Mirrored by the creature’s longing for connection and eagerness to forgive so he doesn’t have to feel hate inside.

It really is the story Guillermo del Toro was born to adapt.

FRANKENSTEIN may be Guillermo del Toro’s magnum opus. A gothic fairy tale divided into two distinct, yet equally enchanting halves. It takes real craft to make this story feel fresh after innumerable adaptations and reinventions, but del Toro does so with flair and heart. The film takes liberties with Mary Shelley’s text that somehow enrich the timeless themes, rather than dilute their meaning. To see the words and story of Shelley, arguably one of greatest authors of all time, fuse with the singular style and poetry of filmmaking possessed by del Toro, arguably one of the best directors working today, creates an unforgettable viewing experience. Oscar Isaac brilliantly portrays the drive and descent into immorality of Victor Frankenstein. Jacob Elordi delivers his best performance to date, ushering in profound emotion in the film’s second half and evoking Rory Kinnear’s performance as The Creature from Penny Dreadful.
