Zimbabwe is honoured to join the international community in commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Declaration on the Right to Development.

The Declaration affirmed a fundamental principle: development is a human right, and every individual and nation must have the opportunity to participate in and benefit from development.

Forty years on, this principle remains highly relevant. Poverty, inequality, climate change, debt pressures and unequal access to technology continue to constrain the development prospects of many developing countries.

Zimbabwe therefore calls for strengthened international solidarity, greater access to affordable development finance, technology transfer and meaningful participation of developing countries.

Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Hon Sen C. Z. Tawengwa today officiated at the Chitepo School of Ideology handover where outgoing Principal Cde Ishmael Mada handed over to incoming Acting Principal Col (Rtd) Ernest Dube.

In his remarks Hon. Sen. Tawengwa said the Chitepo School of Ideology plays a critical role in equipping cadres with liberation history and revolutionary party principles to advance Vision 2030 under "Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo." He urged Col. (Rtd) Dube to build on Cde Mada's work to produce disciplined, patriotic cadres and assured continued support from Government.

Today, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Hon. Prof. dr. Amon Murwira, deposited the instrument of ratification for the Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (the BBNJ Agreement) during the Treaty Event of the 81st Session of UNGA.

Depositing the instrument of ratification for the High Seas Treaty guarantees that landlocked Zimbabwe plays an active role in global ocean governance under its "𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐥𝐥, 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐦𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐧𝐨𝐧𝐞" doctrine.

A major highlight of the session was a declaration by UN Secretary General, Mr. António Guterres, who firmly backed calls for Africa to secure permanent seats on the UN Security Council to reflect modern global realities.

Zimbabwe’s attendance directly drives Zimbabwe’s codified foreign policy, which calls for active multilateralism and global engagement as a core economic strategy to fully integrate the nation into the global economy.

The captivating images and reports from the sidelines of #UNGA81 in New York leave little room for doubt: For the Zimbabwean delegation led by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, the 81st United Nations General Assembly is not yet another routine date on the diplomatic calendar. It is the first high-level week in which Zimbabwe is attending the annual UNGA meetings not merely as a campaigning state, but as an incoming member of the UN Security Council.

A notably high point of the sideline engagements ahead of the start of the official programme was President Mnangagwa’s meeting with the UN Secretary-General António Guterres. This on the back of Zimbabwe’s election in June 2026 by the General Assembly to a non-permanent seat in the Security Council for 2027–2028 with an overwhelming 182 votes.

The country will take its place on 1 January 2027, returning to the Council for the first time since 1991–1992. According to the official UN readout, the Secretary-General congratulated President Mnangagwa on that election. The meeting therefore was more than perfunctory protocol. It placed Zimbabwe’s new multilateral mandate in the Security Council at the centre of its week in New York at #UNGA81.

The same shift was visible on the commercial front. At a well subscribed business dinner, President Mnangagwa hosted 35 senior investors, half of them examining Zimbabwe for the first time. Marc Holtzman, Chairman of the Victoria Falls International Financial Centre, said reforms in mining, services, banking and monetary policy generated genuine interest and changing perceptions. “The business opportunities are amazing. This is Africa’s century and within Africa it is Zimbabwe’s time,” he said. Coming from an international financier rather than a government spokesman, the remark carried notable significance.

Parallel diplomacy reinforced the message of positive change in Zimbabwe. Foreign Affairs Minister Professor Amon Murwira met United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Frank Garcia, to explore ways of advancing and deepening relations between the two countries.

Minister Murwira also signed historic joint communiqués establishing formal diplomatic relations with Malta and with St. Lucia, opening new channels in trade, investment, tourism, financial services, education and people-to-people exchange. These were not ornamental signatures for the gallery. They were policy instruments set to widen Zimbabwe’s international orbit of partners at the very moment the country is joining the Security Council.

The significance of these encounters is sharpened by their timing. They follow the recent enactment of the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No.3) Act Number 6 of 2026, which presents a constitutional and institutional framework for policy continuity; and a more predictable business environment for long-term investment.

Progressive constitutional change at home, a multilateral Security Council mandate abroad, and a bilateral burst of diplomatic and commercial outreach in New York have magnificently arrived together.

All told, the images from the Guterres meeting, the investor turnout and the new diplomatic instruments are more than photo opportunities. They are the best evidence of Zimbabwe’s changed and changing geopolitical engagement: the country is no longer only asking to be heard. From January 2027 it will sit among the 15 Security Council members charged with overseeing international peace and security. Only incorrigible malcontents or those determined not to see it, will miss the direction of travel. Zimbabwe’s moment has come!
