Islamist cleric Omar Bakri Mohammed reportedly said that years before ISIS existed. He practically handed the West the enemy's fucking playbook, and our political establishment responded by pretending everyone was playing by the same rules.

That's the fatal stupidity at the heart of modern Western complacency.

We believe freedom of speech is a principle. An ideological revolutionary can see it as a weapon. We believe religious liberty protects individual conscience. A movement seeking to impose punishment for apostasy can exploit that same protection. We believe elections preserve self-government. An enemy of democracy can view elections as the machinery for dismantling it.

And our institutions keep operating on the breathtakingly naive assumption that everyone ultimately respects the constitutional bargain.

What absolute bullshit.

The contradiction becomes even uglier when the battlefield moves beyond elections into universities, propaganda networks, institutional funding, political pressure, and ideological recruitment. These tools can advance hostile strategic objectives without a single soldier crossing our borders.

Yet merely recognizing that possibility is treated as dangerous extremism by people apparently convinced that enemies cease being enemies once they learn to speak the language of civil liberties.

There's a reason hostile movements exploit free societies. We provide extraordinary protections, presume good faith, and recoil from acknowledging that some political actors intend to abolish the very rights they're invoking.

The enemy understands the asymmetry. The West keeps congratulating itself for refusing to see it.

A republic cannot survive indefinitely when its instinct for self-preservation becomes a source of embarrassment and its enemies' declared intentions are endlessly explained away.

Bakri told us the strategy.

The truly devastating possibility is that a civilization so desperate to prove its tolerance will enthusiastically hand its enemies every instrument they need to destroy it, then congratulate itself for defending democracy while the fucking walls come down.
