Dr. Joshua Andres, Ed.D. What a journey it has been!!!!! I successfully defended my dissertation this afternoon and am overwhelmed reflecting on what this journey entailed. Earning my doctorate isn't about accolades or a fancy title... it's about a deep-rooted fire within myself to achieve something far greater than I thought I was destined to achieve.

A pivotal moment in my life was when my mom passed away when I was 17, a junior in high school. Shortly after her passing, I began to internalize that I wanted a different life for myself... to NEVER be told I wasn't good enough, which is how I imagine my mom felt for much of her life. I am dedicating this work to three people: my husband, my son, and my mom.

Thank you to the family, friends, classmates, and committee members who joined me via Zoom today, and for your ongoing support along the way. There’s no way I would have accomplished this alone. Special shoutout to my husband, Benny. The doctoral journey is a quite selfish one… requiring a significant amount of time away from parenting or my partner but he has been rooting for my every step of the way. ❤️

Next up is the MSUM hooding ceremony and graduation in May but I am officially Ed.DONE!!!!

Look ma, I made it 🥹

While I successfully defended and finished my doctorate degree in September, today’s commencement ceremony was the official closure to a long and incredible journey of learning. However, as a lifelong learner, I am eager to keep learning, growing, and developing the story of me and the world around me.

Sharing this moment with my supportive husband and proud son is what I really want to hold onto forever. I wouldn’t be here without them.

I joined the Native American Cultural Studies class today and learned about the meaning of a bead necklace. Students engaged in deep, meaningful conversations about who inspires them and I created a bead necklace that I will wear with pride. Thank you Ricky, Melody, and Darlene for a wonderful afternoon. The lessons learned today will surely leave a lasting impact on our students.

Student voice and leadership can create real impact when given the space & trust to do so.
