Jaoco Niemann has become the first player to be stroked shots for club abuse at a major championship. The Chilean made a 9 on the 6th hole and threw a club in temper, which meant he was given a 2 shot penalty and his score adjusted to an 11.
The USGA said:
“Joaquin Neimann was assessed two penalty strokes for throwing a club on the 6th hole during Round 1. This act was determined to be serious misconduct under
Rule 1.2b.”
Joaco signed for an opening 78 to be outside the top 100.
