Basically, trauma is SUBJECTIVE. There is and never will be an objective list of events that may constitute what "trauma" is. No one but yourself can determine whether your experiences have been traumatic - no matter what their credentials are.

There's a lot of debate going on about people "overusing" the term "trauma". As a therapist, I have some thoughts on this! (THREAD)

Trauma is an event/s that overwhelms a person's ability to cope.

Our bodies and minds do not understand arbitrary lists of things external sources deem "traumatic" -- our mind/body only know that they are overwhelmed, resulting in complex emotional and physiological responses.

@jacasiegel My fav dynamic as a therapist in college counseling (in NJ ofc) is when my clients ask "can i curse here?" and i get to say "you can say whatever the fuck you want here" lol

Let’s talk about choice when it comes to eating disorder recovery.

Because a lot of us have heard the phrase, “You didn’t choose your eating disorder but you can choose to recover.”

I no longer believe this to be true at all.
