"The Bronx Bull" calls it a day...
Former World Middleweight Champ Jake LaMotta abruptly and unexpectedly announced his retirement #OnThisDay in 1954. The timing of the news caught the boxing world by surprise as he was due to fight Ernie Durando just days later at the Miami Beach Auditorium.
LaMotta said: "I'm tired and I'm through making excuses to myself. I haven't had any pep, and every day I feel listless. I've been telling myself it's the weather, or maybe that I've been working too hard in the gym. Every day it's been maybe this or maybe that. It's time to quit and nobody knows it better than I do."

"Ancient" Archie Moore was held to a controversial 10-round majority decision draw by Willie Pastrano at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles #OnThisDay in 1962. Most ringside observers believed the former undisputed light heavyweight king clearly did enough to win, including hurting Pastrano in the fifth round with a body shot which sent his opponent sprawling into the ropes (pictured). The LA Times branded the scoring - two ringside judges ruled it a draw while the referee gave Moore the nod - as "stunning" and "weird".
