El 18/07/1898, Marie y Pierre Curie descubren el Polonio (Po, nº atómico 84), bautizado en honor a Polonia, país natal de Marie. Lo hallaron al comprobar que la pechblenda (mineral del que se extrae el uranio) era mucho más radiactiva que el uranio puro, deduciendo que contenía un elemento desconocido. Hoy tiene muy pocos usos debido a su extrema toxicidad y elevada radiactividad (fue el veneno utilizado para asesinar al exespía Alexander Litvinenko en 2006), pero su descubrimiento condujo meses después al aislamiento del radio y sentó las bases de la radioterapia y la medicina nuclear. #HistoriaMedicina

Hoy recordamos el nacimiento de Christian Andreas Doppler (1803), el científico que nos enseñó que el movimiento cambia la forma en que percibimos el mundo 🌊🔊. Su famoso efecto Doppler explica cómo la frecuencia de una onda varía según la velocidad entre la fuente y el observador: en palabras simples, si algo que emite ondas se acerca, las ondas se “aprietan” y si se aleja, se “estiran” (como el sonido de una ambulancia cuando pasa frente a ti 🚑).

Este principio no solo se usa en astronomía o meteorología 🌌🌦️, sino que es clave en la medicina moderna. Gracias al Doppler, hoy podemos “ver” el flujo de la sangre en tiempo real 🫀, evaluar arterias y venas, detectar obstrucciones, estudiar el corazón con ecocardiogramas y vigilar la salud del feto durante el embarazo 🤰.

Un descubrimiento del siglo XIX que sigue salvando vidas en el XXI. Ciencia básica que se transforma en medicina de precisión.

On this day 100 years ago physics laureate Werner Heisenberg submitted a paper that revolutionised quantum mechanics.

Heisenberg was only 23 years old when he submitted the paper "Quantum mechanical reinterpretation of kinematic and mechanical relations". For this theory and the applications of it which resulted especially in the discovery of allotropic forms of hydrogen, Heisenberg was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for 1932.

His new theory was based only on what can be observed, that is to say, on the radiation emitted by the atom. We cannot, he said, always assign to an electron a position in space at a given time, nor follow it in its orbit, so that we cannot assume that the planetary orbits postulated by Niels Bohr actually exist. Mechanical quantities, such as position or velocity should be represented, not by ordinary numbers, but by abstract mathematical structures called “matrices” and he formulated his new theory in terms of matrix equations.
