Tostão’s story is an incredible one.
One of the most talented footballers in history and would have gone down as one of the greatest of all time if he didn’t retire early.
• First became famous when he scored 47 goals in a single game for his school team.
• Retired with 320 Career Goals in 499 Games | 32 goals in 54 games for Brazil. Between the ages of 15-26.
• Handed Pelé his greatest ever career defeat, 9-4 across both legs of the 1966 Brazilian League final. 6-2 in the first leg.
• Aged 22 he was struck in the head with the ball so hard it detached his retina. His sight problems kept resurfacing after surgical attempts to fix the problem.
• He finished top scorer in the 1970 World Cup Qualifiers with 10 goals & won the 1971 South American footballer of the year
• Played in the 1970 World Cup with almost no vision out of one eye, and required daily treatment
• Played his last game for Brazil at 25! And retired at 26.
• Is Cruzeiro’s all time Top Goalscorer
