Speech that former PM @StephenHarper
delivered on May 29, 2008, in London, England
I should mention that while our plan will effectively establish a 'price on carbon' of $65 a tonne, growing to that rate over the next decade...Our plan will compel industry not just to pay for their carbon emissions but to actually reduce them. Industry has told us they want and they need certainty. Our framework provides that. Clear targets, realistic timelines, fair across the board application. Now industry knows what they need to do and when they need to do it.

Great stories here. My favorite is how before basic income, women would trek so far every day to fetch water. After UBI, someone used his money to buy a motorbike to use to fetch water, which women can now pay for using their UBI.
UBI CREATES ENTREPRENEURS AND PAYING CUSTOMERS.
The liberals created their own problem in trying to deliver a 'revenue neutral' solution... they should've simply put the tax in place and used the 80% revenue to finance heat pumps at 0%... the last 20% should have gone to develop a much more resilient energy grid.
I’m not sure many (outside of Atlantic Canada) fully understand how many households depend on heating oil on PEI.
Not because they want to. Because they don’t have an alternative. #pei#Fuel
Add in a universal tax on wealth reforming to treat every single dollar of income (wealth) EXACTLY the same regardless of the source, quantity, or whose hands it happens to be in!
Capitalism has the core fundamental principles of maximizing profits by charging ALL the market will bear, and ever increasing productivity by doing more with less.
@implausibleblog They all said years ago that the computer age would give workers lots of free time. Shorter working week. Better standard of living. We ended up with long working weeks, zero hour contracts and piss pour wages
It should also be taxable, after all the only truly fair taxation is one that treats every single dollar of income (wealth) EXACTLY the same regardless of the source, quantity, or whose hands it happens to be in!
@implausibleblog "Universal high income" is universal basic income. To qualify as basic income, a periodic cash payment need not be some arbitrarily low or high amount. If UBI were set at 25% of GDP per capita as I suggest, then as AI grows GDP, it would grow quite high and still be basic income.
The very nature of business DEMANDS that it pass on ALL input costs to it's customers... grocers will simple force price reductions further down the supply chains
Food prices have increased by 30%.
Meanwhile, Canada’s three largest grocers — Loblaws, Sobeys, and Metro earned +$3.6 billion in profits in 2022.
Asking CEOs to lower prices won't work.
You have to make them — and @theJagmeetSingh's bill will do just that.
Since talking about an AI doctor last night I have heard from several about cases, like this one, where GPT-4 caught things their human doctors missed.
Wow.
