I feel incredibly humbled — and slightly gobsmacked — to be part of the breaking news team that earned an Emmy last night, for our coverage of the Israeli offensive in Gaza since the Hamas-led October 7 attacks.
The past year has opened my eyes to the emotional labor, and the mammoth, collaborative efforts involved in reporting on war. I am grateful to learn every day from an excellent class of journalists, including our editors, writers and correspondents in London, Jerusalem, Abu Dhabi, and the US.
As @AbeerSalmanCNN beautifully said, our coverage in these 11 months, is testament to the tireless efforts of our Palestinian colleagues in Gaza — Mohammad Al Sawalhi, Khader Al Za’anoun, and Tareq Al Hilou — who have seen their homes turned to rubble, endured the loss of loved ones, and have been displaced multiple times. Yet they are committed to life.
Despite miserable conditions in Gaza, they have made the impossible possible — by tirelessly sharing the images and stories of their people to the world.
The Israeli offensive has been the deadliest period for journalists since 1992, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). At least 116 journalists and media workers have been confirmed killed — including 111 Palestinians, two Israelis and three Lebanese — the CPJ reported on September 26.
