Sports Minister Olivia Grange has announced that the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) will be back in Jamaica this summer.

Grange in a statement on Friday said that the Cabinet gave approval for a new Jamaica franchise and for the country to host matches in the CPL 2026 season starting in August.

Hurricane Melissa is a one-in-a-hundred-year event for Jamaica. We have never faced a hurricane of this magnitude, and early estimates show about $8.8 billion in damage. The destruction is widespread, homes, businesses, roads, schools, and even our forests. In the Cockpit Country alone, we estimate that 51 percent of forest cover was lost.

Melissa has also revealed important truths we must confront.

First, how we build. Even with limited resources, stronger construction practices, proper roof design, hurricane straps, and basic proven techniques, can greatly reduce damage.

Second, where we build. Some of the greatest losses occurred in areas that were never safe, riverbanks, gully banks, steep hills, unstable soil. While government must expand access to safe housing, we also have a responsibility to make wiser choices about where we establish our homes.

Third, the climate we live in is changing. Hotter oceans are producing stronger, more frequent storms. Over the last 20 years, the number of Category 5 hurricanes has increased significantly. We now face cycles of heavy rain, drought, flooding, and major storms almost every year.

The climate will not change for us, we must adapt to it. That means building smarter, choosing safer locations, and preparing for more intense weather.

As we recover from Melissa, these lessons must guide us.

I extend warm congratulations to Dr. Godwin Friday on his election as Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines.

This is an important moment for the Vincentian people, who have participated in a peaceful and democratic process to shape the future of their nation. I wish Dr. Friday every success as he undertakes the responsibility of national leadership, and I pray God’s guidance and wisdom upon him in the work ahead.

Jamaica values its close friendship with St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and we look forward to strengthening our cooperation as we continue to build a more resilient and prosperous Caribbean region together.

May this new chapter bring hope, unity, and progress for all Vincentians at home and across the diaspora.

I commend Dr. Ralph Gonsalves for his long and dedicated service to the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and to the Caribbean region.

Over the years, Dr. Gonsalves has been a strong voice within CARICOM, consistently advocating for deeper regional cooperation and a more integrated Caribbean community.

His passion for regionalism and his unwavering belief in the value of collective action have helped to shape many important conversations across our Community.

I acknowledge his significant contribution to public life and to our shared regional journey, and I am confident that St. Vincent and the Grenadines will continue to benefit from his deep knowledge, experience, and commitment to national progress.

Dear Jamaica, in our own difficult times, there are blessings for which we are grateful. For everyone who prayed for little Azora and Azaria our conjoined twins, they were separated this morning by the skillful surgical team of the King Salman Humanitarian mission in Saudi Arabia @KSRelief_EN. Surgery lasted 5 hours and one little heart will require further surgery for an unrelated defect, but for now, both are stable. Their Jamaican medical team and wider surgical teams were able to observe virtually. As we give thanks to God for this morning's success, please keep these baby girls, their parents and indeed everyone who has been part of this humanitarian mission of love, in your prayers.@mfaftja
