Before #GCX2027 vacation giveaways - first a story...and I'm tearing up again as I write this. It's a long one - please read this. For me, this is my second GCX, first time officially part of the team...it was in this moment that I finally understood what GCX is.

It took two people all of 5 minutes to find me and the golden envelopes having a milkshake at Mel's during the After Party.

Seen here? Axel. I read my riddle - he pondered, guessed wrong...I read it again, second guess wrong. On the third one he got it. He opened the envelope and his hands were shaking. He was crying when he told me his story.

He doesn't go anywhere. Ever. Not a convention, not far from home. Nowhere. He struggles with a great deal, but #Destiny was his life. Through it, he found his first real friends, his found family. When he heard it was ending active development and heard about us, he did the bravest thing in the world. He left home. His friends were waiting for him to meet him in person for the first time. He said this whole weekend was the most scared he's ever felt in his life. But he wouldn't have changed it for the world. They'd promised to be back next year together anyway, but winning this meant everything to him.

By the time he was done we were both crying in front @sixsidesgaming. I took his hand and I told him something I've learned in life. "One day a game will end. One day you'll log off for the last time. But the people you found because of that game? Those are bonds unbreakable. That's found family. Those people you never let go of. That is finding your people."

I love doing this. I've been doing marketing and event planning for half my life now, but for the first time I feel that what this is - is so much more than a gaming convention. This is a vacation with your family, it's a reunion, it's getting off a plane our out of a car and feeling whole again - seen and so unconditionally loved.

So many of us struggle with lonliness, we fight through grief, we struggle through pain, and fear, and anxiety and trauma. But once a year, and for many for the first time we take the bravest risk of taking a leap of faith and doing something for the first time. More often than not that one ripple changes our lives. Friendships old, friendships new, opportunities, networking, but also marriage proposals...they happen here.

We found each other through gaming.
But through this one weekend - so many of us find something we never expected: ourselves.

We'll see you next year Axel.
