@mcmeisterua@smaragdhi@theafroaussie In Thai it's ฝรั่ง, which is general transliterated as Farang. In Central Thaiit is very much an
"r" sound (in Bangkok it is almost a rolled "r" like Spanish). But it is true that as you move northeast into Laos the ร letter gets pronounced more like an "L".
@theafroaussie Umm--I know it was not the largest bust this year or of all time because I live here and read the news. Sure, there may be things we don't know. But to state "largest ever" we must use facts. Anything else must mean you're using Thailand, a place you don't know, for your agenda.
@theafroaussie The 'largest in history' framing came from viral posts, not Thai authorities. Always worth asking why certain stories travel so fast — and which details get lost along the way.
@theafroaussie I live in Thailand — this isn't even the largest bust this year. In January, PM Anutin announced the dismantling of nationwide networks involving 330M+ meth tablets. Alfasi's operation was ~50M baht on one island. Orders of magnitude smaller.
@jbarro In Thai media, some people will even refer to politicians by this nickname. However, it is never used formally.
So - Using Mr. Thaksin is the conventional and formal way to refer to him. Similarly, his daughter and sister would be Mrs. Paetongtarn and Mrs. Yingluck.
@jbarro - Your full first name is only used in formal and professional settings. It is typically paired with an honorific (Khun [meaning Mr./Mrs.], Doctor, Professor, etc.)
- Your nickname is used in most of your day to day life. Your friends and family will all use your nickname.
Phil Sussman, an Army veteran who worked for USAID, tells NBC he feels "absolutely betrayed" after receiving a termination letter.
"This isn't a meme. This isn't a tweet. This is myself and my wife and my three children who don't know how we're gonna pay the mortgage next month," Sussman said.
He added that federal employees have "spent their entire lives dedicated to helping others, sacrificing for others."

Just gotta repeat it:
They have not found a single dollar of fraud. They are just calling spending they don’t like “fraud,” and violating the Constitution to impound it.
‘Field hospitals in Thai refugee camps, landmine clearance in war zones, and drugs to treat millions suffering from diseases such as HIV are among the programs facing the chop as President Donald Trump contemplates massive cuts to U.S. foreign aid.’ https://t.co/X12pMVkWa6
He’s patiently standing in line, waiting to vote.
Stop for a second and think about what this moment means for him…what this moment COULD HAVE meant for HIM.
And then thank @JoeBiden for being selfless and for making one of the hardest decisions in his life not about him, but about America.
Reporter: Trump has accused you of ignoring—
Biden: He's lying and the governor told him he was lying. I've spoken to the governor.. I don't know why he does this and the reason I get so angry about it, I don't care about what he says about me, but I care what he communicates to the people that are in need. He implies that we're not doing everything possible. We are. I assume you heard the Republican Governor of Georgia talk about that. He was on the phone with me more than once. So that's simply not true.
And it's irresponsible.
So Trump campaign was told the rules and laws that apply to everyone at Arlington, decided to break them, assaulted a cemetery employee trying to prevent law breaking, then slandered her character. https://t.co/LcwMOPQFby
Today marks the seventh anniversary of the Burma military’s genocide and crimes against humanity targeting Rohingya. The United States continues to honor the victims and stand with the survivors as they seek justice and accountability for these atrocities.
Vice President Harris: "President Biden and I are working to end this war such that Israel is secure, the hostages are released, the suffering in Gaza ends, and the Palestinian people can realize their right to dignity. Security. Freedom. And self-determination."
President Biden: "Join me in promising your whole heart to this effort. That's where MY heart will be. I'll be the best volunteer the Harris-Walz campaign has ever seen."
