Ferrari painted every F40 red. All 1,311 of them left the factory in the same color, and when the Sultan of Brunei wanted his in something else, he had to send them out to be redone after the fact.

So this blue one is a trick. It's film, a brushed-metal wrap called Blue Steel, and the company that makes it cut only 50 rolls worldwide. Do the math on that. The material covering this car is rarer than the car it's covering.

The reason nobody paints an F40 blue is money. Original F40 paint was famously so thin you could see the carbon-kevlar weave through it, because Ferrari counted grams on this car. It shipped with no carpet and no radio. Collectors pay a premium for cars that still wear that factory-thin red, and a respray would vaporize a chunk of a $3 million valuation the moment the gun came out.

A wrap sidesteps all of it. The owner gets to commit Ferrari heresy for a season, and when the market comes calling, it peels off and the untouched red is still underneath.

1,311 F40s. 50 rolls of film. For once the wrap is the harder thing to get.
