🔸Low float - High FDV - Project age - Narratives and more
Many have written about this topic in the last weeks. Let me add some data-driven insights to it with two charts.
A/ 'Not Circulating supply' and recent performance
The chart below shows the percentage of supply not circulating vs the last 3 months performance. The color of the circles indicate the age of the project in months. (Lighter/Darker circles represent project launched recently/a while ago).
What can we observe?
1/ Memecoins have the best performance. They have the entire supply circulating on day 1.
Interestingly both older memecoins (shib, floki) and newer ones (bome, wif, pepe) had great performance.
2/ The worst perfoming projects are newer VC projects where the portion of "Not Circulating Supply (ncs)" is very high:
project, ncs, 3 months perf
DYM, 86%, -61%
W, 82%, -58%
MANTA, 75%, -47%
TIA, 83%, -43%
ALT, 89%, -35%
WLD, 98%, -20%
3/ Interestingly, there are some outliers there:
project, ncs, 3 months perf
JUP, 87%, 157%
ONDO, 86%, 193%
Both of these projects have been listed in January 2024. This shows that it's still possible for relatively newly listed projects with high ncs to outperform.
Q: How? What distinguish them?
A: The narrative (more on this later)
Now removing the memcoins outliers, let's have a closer look at what the distribution looks like
4/ Looking more closely, we observe that although high ncs projects tend to underperform, there is not a very obvious distribution or pattern among very low/high ncs projects.
For example, good projects with low ncs such as FXS (20% ncs), MASK (4% ncs), and RPL (0% ncs) had respectively -44%, -10% and -22% performance in the last 3 months.
5/ On the upside, we observe that projects with lower ncs have generally a better performance, independently of their age.
My conclusion here is that generally speaking 1/ market conditions 2/ narratives are the main factors determining the performance of assets. Nevertheless, high ncs project tend to be perform worse and are better options to hedge positions or express a bearish view on the market (short).
B/ Low Float High FDV vs High Float Low FDV
If 'Low Float High FDV' is bad, is 'High Float Low FDV' good?
I looked at top 500 projects by mc listed in 23/24 (Data: CMC) and set anything with ncs above 80% as low float.
Let's look at the data:
We can clearly see Low float High fdv projects have had a pretty bad performance with two notable exceptions: $ONDO and $JTO (Guess why)
On the other hand, high float low fdv projects generally performed much better even ignoring the few memecoins outliers.
So what?
Ultimately, the quest is the same for all of us: Which alts to buy.
Low float high fdv projects tend to perform poorly. Sure, there are 2,3 exceptions but do you wanna do all the hard work and dd to maybe find those? You can but It's a lot of efforts and success is not guaranteed.
At the same time, you might not be comfortable trading memecoins although data shows they outperform in that regard.
So what should you do?
1/ Become a narrative trader
I've said it many times. If there is enough demand for a project, any sell pressure could be absorbed. And this type of high demand only comes from catalysts and narratives. Since I've already talked extensively about this, I won't elaborate it further here.
2/ Find the Sweet Spot
There are two extremes:
Memecoins have a ncs of 0%
New VC coins have high fdv and a ncs of >80%
Let's say the Sweet Spot is projects with a ncs between 10% < x < 50%
Here are the recent best performing ones:
Projects like fet, ftm, pendle, rndr, agix, and akt fall in this category.
Now combine that with some basic narrative trading and you get the icing on the cake.
