“I’m just going to tell you the truth. I don’t see you going to college in your condition. You won’t amount to more than just being a pretty face.”

I remember these words vividly. I was told this senior year of high school by my guidance counselor. “My condition” she’s referring to was having my son at 16. I went to see her to get help on how I can apply to college because I wanted to better myself for Nick. I wanted to be educated and create a better life for us. Not going to lie, her words got to me. I went home and cried my eyes out that day. I thought I was dumb, and believed her when she said I wouldn’t amount to anything. But I am my mother’s daughter and her fiery strength dwells inside me.

Here’s the most important part, I didn’t do this to prove her wrong (that’s a bonus). I did this for me. I did it for my son, my family, my loved ones. I did this to show every single person on this earth that has ever faced adversity, discouragement, criticism, etc. that no one can tell you what you are and are not capable of. You don’t need approval, or validation. You are your own fierce force of fiery strength. Go. After. It. And. Get. It. Done.

Professor Jewell is back 🥹♥️

Honestly, it’s hard to express how extremely elated I am to be teaching Communications once again this semester. With six classes total, I have a full time course load to my roster!

Here’s the thing….I have a learning and reading disability that I didn’t find out about until I visited the eye doctor as an adult. I’m dyslexic; meaning I have trouble understanding and reading written language, and at times reading out loud. This was apparent when I was a kid, except I didn’t know what it was. My belief was simply that I wasn’t smart. But turns out I just have a different way of learning! With the help of college professors over the years teaching me how to incorporate different tactics, and techniques has allowed me to gain confidence in my comprehension skills. ☺️

This time I’ll be the one providing students with the support and guidance they need to succeed in the courses I enjoy teaching such as, Public Speaking, Poetry, English Comp, Script Writing, Broadcasting Media, Public Relations, Marketing, Creative Writing, Women’s Literature, Diversity in Writing, Inclusion and Sensitivity Seminar, and more!
