JUST IN: Ecuador is in total chaos as armed gangs have reportedly stormed University of Guayaquil, attempting to kidnap students.

The incident comes as a television station crew was taken hostage on live air.

The chaos is in response to President Daniel Noboa's decision to call for a state of emergency after the escape of crime boss Adolfo Macías.

🚨🇪🇨 FITO - NOTORIOUS GANG LEADER WHO ESCAPED PRISON

The escape of Jose Adolfo Macias, known as Fito, leader of the Los Choneros gang, from a maximum-security prison in Guayaquil is what started the current wave of narcoterrorism sweeping across Ecuador.

Fito was serving a 34-year sentence for organized crime and murder, previously escaped in 2013, only to be recaptured after three months.

Ecuador's President Noboa announced a 60-day state of emergency as violence escalated with prison riots and a wave of attacks by criminal groups across the country.

The chaos began with prison takeovers, hostages, execution of guards, and an escape by notorious gang leader, Jose Adolfo Macias, alias Fito.

Then unrest spilled onto the streets: Explosive attacks and vehicle arson in multiple cities, and the takeover of a TV station.

Curfews are in place for most of the country.
