The initiative is being seen as a sustainable water-management model for fragile Himalayan ecosystems while improving irrigation security and supporting agriculture in remote Ladakh villages.
Ladakh has launched India’s first rock check dam project under the “Sindhu Jal Samriddhi Abhiyan” to improve irrigation and water security in remote villages. The eco-friendly dam has been built on the Indus River near Upshi, around 44 km from Leh, at an altitude of 11,400 feet.
The structure was completed in just seven days using around 180 metric tonnes of locally sourced rocks without cement or concrete, making it environmentally sustainable. It is about 200 feet long and designed to withstand high river flow during summer months.
