In the past few weeks, I have encountered these videos of young, beautiful, Gen Z girls, whom previous commentators would have referred to as Slay Queens, but I am reliably informed are officially known as "Baddies". In the clips, they are expertly pointing out to their peers the pitfalls contained in the Finance Bill 2024. It's amazing to watch, because this is the generation that we thought couldn't be bothered by socioeconomic and political issues, and which we assumed preferred gyrating sensually while generously displaying expansive kilos of backside, like goddesses of illicit copulation, on Tik Tok.

In other words, Ruto has effortlessly managed, by sheer incompetence, to draw out children to fight for their future. Today, these young people are all over the CBD battling the police. And do you know what should worry the Ruto regime, the police and the National Intelligence Service? Well, it is that these young people are mobilising themselves; not within political parties or any organisational frameworks, but merely as Kenyans angry and hungry following the policies of the government. There is no more Raila-led maandamano. There is no Raila Odinga on whose doorstep to place blame. This is how the Arab Spring began. People mobilised on social media and voila!

The second group that Ruto will regret messing up is the MIDDLE CLASS. In most countries of the earth, the middle class is the vanguard of economic growth, as skilled professionals, businessmen and industry navigators. Their ability to grow is what consequently grows the opportunities in housing, education and social amenities. Because of this, the middle class is essentially the safety net of the poor. Mama mboga, boda boda, cobblers, labourers and farmers practically wake up to serve the middle class. In middle class communities, cleaners and technicians from the slums camp at the gates every morning to provide labour and earn a livelihoods for themselves.

And yet, Ruto's economic and taxation policies aim directly to kill the middle class. It is possible that the children of the middle class now demonstrating in town have been jolted into reality by the suffering of their parents. I have heard a middle class person state that rather than go to work every day but take home nothing at the end of the month, he will opt for early retirement, collect whatever is owing to him and head back to his village. Between those opting for this option and those holding on, are numerous cases of depression, auctions, broken marriages and lifestyle diseases caused by stress. William Ruto is therefore not just an incompetent person, but also a lifestyle disease.

As Raila Odinga drifts away, as the middle class gets emasculated and as young people hit the streets on their own, someone is staring at his waterloo.
