Since I’m blocked by whoever this very pretty, but not very bright woman is, I’ll explain 8 ways the Barbary pirates are not Iran. Who on earth is telling you guys to use this talking point? Stop it. It’s embarrassing.
First, unlike Iran, the Barbary pirates had initiated force on America, capturing sailors, and holding them for ransom.
Second, unlike Iran, Tripoli had declared war on America when Jefferson entered office in 1801, because they weren’t happy with America’s lack of “paying them tribute.” (Extortion/coersion)
Third, unlike Iran, this was dealt with in international Waters
Fourth, unlike Iran, Congress used the constitutional provision to “provide the common defense” in this case (see source documents).
Fifth, this was one of the cases that helped outline the war powers act.
Sixth it took 14 years and James Madison following up, but Tributes were abolished.
Seventh, unlike, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Yemen, Somalia, and Pakistan this was all defensive. Thomas Jefferson and James Madison didn’t regime change the Barbary Pirates, decimate their land, starve their people, let them invade our country after, bankrupt America, change nothing, and leave them worse often than they were before.
Eighth, abolish public school.

Fort Barfoot is being renamed back to its original name, Fort Pickett.

Van T. Barfoot received the Medal of Honor for single-handedly traversing a minefield to destroy three German machine gun nests, a tank, and an artillery emplacement to save his men.

He later served in Korea and flew helicopters in Vietnam.

At 90 years old, he fought his Homeowners Association for the right to fly the American flag in his own front yard—and won. His case helped inspire Virginia state law protecting that right from HOA interference.

Meanwhile, General George Pickett led the infamous “Pickett’s Charge” at Gettysburg.
It failed catastrophically, resulting in over 50% casualties to his division and marking the turning point of both the battle and the Civil War.

After the war, Pickett was implicated in the execution of Union POWs, a war crime so serious he fled to Canada to avoid prosecution.
