We don't own or run them? 50 HBCUs are public. 49 HBCUs are private. Many of them founded by Black legislators and former slaves. Some of them founded by the AME, Methodist, and Catholic church.
HBCUs literally BUILT the Black middle class, and this is with constant efforts to close them, or severely underfund them. Only 100 remain open today.
And you put the weight of the nation's 43+M Black people on the these 100 institutions ?
HBCUs heavily punch above their weight in terms of STEM success, the arts, education and community work.
