Hamtramck City Council Approves Religious Animal Sacrifices on Residential Properties

In a 3-2 vote, with Mayor Amer Ghalib casting the tie-breaking vote, the council approved an update to the city ordinance. Hamtramck is known for having the first all-Muslim city council in the United States. 

The decision follows legal advice that a ban would likely violate the First Amendment, citing the 1993 U.S. Supreme Court case Church of the Lukumi Babalu Aye, Inc. v. City of Hialeah.

Key Rules Under the New Ordinance:
• Residents must notify the city clerk at least one week in advance.
• The animal must be slaughtered humanely (e.g., quickly severing the carotid arteries with a sharp instrument).
• The ritual must be conducted out of public view, such as in a backyard or private area.
• Proper sanitation and waste disposal are required, with the city able to inspect the property afterward to protect community health. 

This change primarily relates to religious practices like those during Eid al-Adha. The ordinance aims to balance religious freedoms with local regulations on animal handling and public welfare.
