President and Director-Counsel of LDF (NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, Inc.) the nation's first civil and human rights law org. Tweets are my own.
History has demonstrated time and time again that true change comes not from a single election or moment but from sustained work.
I invite you to join LDF in these precarious times and fight to protect and advance American democracy and racial justice as we have always done.
We will continue to throw all of our resources into the fight to ensure that Alabama voters have the fair representation that they deserve in Congress.” Deuel Ross, LDF Director of Litigation

“The Sup Ct’s decision gives cover to Alabama & others to deliberately & openly discriminate against Black voters w/o fear of any consequence. The Court’s shameless decision to reinstate a racially discriminatory map defies any thoughtful or consistent application of the law…
A powerful reminder of the precious lives fortunate to be saved from and those tragically lost to the cruel and increasingly unusual punishment of the death penalty.

The dismantling of the Voting Rights Act is a reminder that we have unfinished business. This fight is ours and we are going to finish it. Freedom Summer 2026 launches Juneteenth weekend. Join us for activations all the way through midterm elections: https://t.co/ErBF1lpTEq
Not only is there evidence of Alabama’s racial discrimination reaffirmed by a fed court, as testimony at last Friday’s hearing confirmed, state officials dn have enough time to switch maps before the August primary without spawning chaos and potentially serious errors.
This is now a game of truth or dare for SCOTUS. A month ago 6 justices held “Section 2 imposes liability…when the evidence supports a strong inference that the state intentionally drew its districts to afford minority voters less oppty b/c of their race.”
Alabama blatantly attempted to reinstate a congressional map that the legislature deliberately enacted to deny Black voters a voice in Congress. State officials cannot switch maps before the August primary without spawning chaos and serious errors.
This is a win for democracy.
A federal court has again vindicated the constitutional rights of voters in the Black Belt. All Alabamians can look forward to voting under a fair map this fall. https://t.co/e3wGAxtP7C
By noon, more than 26,000 people had voted, surpassing the highest single-day early voting turnout ever recorded for a primary election in South Carolina.
By 3 p.m., an estimated 44,600 ballots had been cast.
The previous record was 23,000 primary ballots cast in 2024. #scpol

BREAKING: Court Rejects Alabama House Map, Calling It Unfair to Black Voters
Our teams have been working nonstop around the clock since the Callais decision to defend the maps in Alabama. This critical victory affirms that Black voters deserve fair maps.

Legend Clarence B. Jones—lawyer, speechwriter, editor, scholar, professor and confidante of MLK—helped formulate one of the most iconic speeches of the civil rights movement and ensured the world read Letter from a Birmingham Jail. Rest in peace & power. https://t.co/1u1XCoNgYW
Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson says her colleagues' handling of the Louisiana voting rights case may have compromised the court's impartiality in political matters. https://t.co/O4VhYXUR3q
Generations looking back on this moment of democratic collapse will see Louisiana v. Callais as its tipping point. The decision isn’t just bereft of intellectual & moral grounding, like Dred Scott & Plessy it is, as @cristianafarias notes, the antithesis.

OUR time is NOW.

The Trump-directed power grab by manipulating district lines is not the end goal. The question we should be asking is what they intend to do with this power. And the question they should be asking is whether we have ever taken a power grab sitting down. https://t.co/LilySAlE8N
These prosecutors must be sanctioned and penalized for these patent violations of law otherwise they will continue unchecked by less courageous judges.
#BREAKING: Jansing: “A federal judge is blasting what she calls the incredibly shocking behavior of federal prosecutors, dismissing all charges against a group of immigration protestors known as the Broadview Six…the judge says her trust in the DOJ was broken after learning of prosecutors communication with grand jurors OUTSIDE of the jury room, excusing grand jurors who disagreed with the government’s case, and what she found MOST problematic, was that all of the misconduct was REDACTED out of transcripts.”🤦♀️
One of the best antidotes to political anxiety is action. We are not helpless and there is energy in community and empathetic acts. Let’s take heart and take action. #mustread
