COLORFUL METEORS TUESDAY NIGHT! 🌠

The Perseid meteor shower is coming and I AM SO EXCITED! This will be the best display since 2018. There will be 50-75 meteors every hour under clear, dark skies and no moon to outshine them!

It's because Earth is plowing through a clump of pebbles in space, which burn up in our outer atmosphere. These pebbles were left by comet Swift-Tuttle, which last passed by us in the early 90s.

But what makes the rainbow colors associated with Perseid meteors?
1.) Their composition! Different elements burn different colors. (Remember high school chemistry class?)
2.) The meteor compresses/superheats a cushion of air, ionizing it and making it glow. (These meteors are zipping through the skies FAST... 37 miles per second!)

MOST will be yellowish. Some are teal/green, due to magnesium and nickel, or excited oxygen. Red colors result from excited atmospheric nitrogen and oxygen.

There will also be some fireballs! A fireball is an extra-bright meteor. (For technical folks, it has to be -3 magnitude brightness, about on par with the plant Venus's apparent luminosity.) Meteors can be particularly bright if they are bigger or penetrate deeper into Earth's atmosphere.

The Perseid meteor shower is rich in fireballs. In fact, the Perseids are the most prolific fireball-producer of any meteor shower.

Most shooting stars/meteors during the Perseids are only the size of a grain of puffed rice, but bigger meteors – sometimes the size of a golf ball – can sometimes burn up and make for a dramatic fireball.

"We have found that one meteor shower produces more fireballs than any other," said Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office. "It's the Perseid meteor shower."

His office has been using a network of camera to track fireballs since 2008.

This year's display peaks August 11-13, Tuesday through Thursday!
