The Trump Administration just rolled out the revised 340B Rebate Model Pilot Program. It’s about time.

This program has exploded to nearly $100 billion in just three years. The low-income patients it was created to help are getting almost none of that money. So where’s it all going?

Big tax-exempt hospital systems have turned 340B into a cash cow. They buy drugs at steep discounts, bill patients and insurers the full price, and pocket the difference. These aren’t small rural clinics struggling to stay open. They’re massive hospital chains with armies of lobbyists in Washington fighting to keep anyone from checking how they spend the money.

Zero real oversight is a recipe for fraud. Just look at what recently happened in Florida: a Haitian immigrant fraudster used a fake nonprofit clinic to rip off $58 million through 340B. He bought a $2.5 million mansion, a Bentley, and a fleet of Mercedes. Now, he’s headed to prison and is facing a deportation.

Good riddance!

The new pilot finally adds basic accountability. Instead of handing out automatic discounts up front and hoping for the best, it verifies eligibility with actual claims data before the money moves.

Predictably, the hospital lobby is screaming that this will “threaten the safety net.”

If billions of dollars in taxpayer-backed drug discounts are flowing every year, making sure they actually reach patients shouldn’t be controversial. The fact that some people treat it like a crisis tells you exactly who’s been cashing in.

President Trump put patients ahead of Big Hospital profits, which was the right call.
