They explore two complementary ideas — each rebalancing the way competition and cooperation are entangled within institutions.
1.     Elections represent the people — but so do juries.
• Elections frame politics as contest, building polarisation and theatricality into the system’s DNA.
• Juries chosen by lottery frame it as the collective search for solutions most of us can live with.
2.     Open competition for leadership amplifies dark triad of personality types at the extremes and predicates ALL representation on the self-assertion and self-interest of representatives.
• Leaving other human virtues unrewarded – listening to, involving and considering others.
• The alternative is ‘bottom-up meritocracy’. It delivered widely celebrated stability and competence to Venice’s republic for five hundred years and governs Wikipedia today.
