In capitalist fashion they were relegated to meaningless rote labor almost entirely. Can't really blame folks for being disincentivized when put in that situation.

Workers required to work to procure means of subsistence: that's the situation capitalism puts workers into. The power structure merely took place of, rather than abolishing, the bourgeoisie
